Guest Hunter, Maj Anya DeBear

Welcome..

Maj Anya DeBear

Maj Anya DeBear

Maj Anya DeBear, this week’s Guest Hunter. Maj Anya is a textile designer and artist based in New York City. She launched her line of luxe printed scarves, Ursidae, after finding out that her father was dying of cancer.  The prints are based on a series of tessellation drawings made by him in 1975, and his last wish to his family had been that they help share his designs with the public.  She considers Ursidae a family company, hence the name, which translates to ‘the family of bears’ in Latin.  All of Ursidae’s scarves are named after members of the DeBear family, or Maj Anya’s close circle of friends.

Maj Anya grew up on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, but is half Danish and spends time in Copenhagen whenever possible (she will happily give you a whole other list of favorite things for that city, if you ask nicely). She collects vintage scarves and kimonos, and hopes that her pieces will be coveted and then passed down from generation to generation, just as her father’s prints were passed on to her. As a Dane, Maj Anya’s ultimate style icon is Karen Blixen, and Maj Anya is occasionally known to don one of her scarves as a turban in an attempt to emulate her.

When she isn’t working, she enjoys board games, fantasizing about time travel and listening to music with a good string section. CLICK HERE TO FIND OUT her super cool picks and some local spots we can’t wait to check out.

Sleep No More

New York or heading this way? Go see Sleep No More. I’ll be honest, I haven’t yet, but I think I’m the exception at this point. Apparently it’s amazing and no two people have quite the same experience. Enjoy, I guess it’s like nothing else out there.

New Amsterdam Market

So..

New Amsterdam Market

New Amsterdam Market

those Black and Blanco cookies I mentioned yesterday are one of the many amazing discoveries I came across on a recent trip to the New Amstersdam Market. The Market runs every Sunday from 11am – 4pm at the old Fulton Fish Market in Lower Manhattan (right on South Street). The list of vendors is totally impressive, so go hungry and be ready to make it part of your Sunday routine!

100%Gumdrop "Wish" Necklace

100%Gumdrop "Wish" Necklace

okay, maybe a bit more than mildly obsessed with 100%Gumdrop. The NYC line makes “smartymouth jewelry for smartypants girls” out of sterling silver, stainless steel and 14k gold dipped.  All pieces are made in the USA and everything’s super cool. With one word necklaces like “wish” and “star” to numbers and flip flop necklaces like “hello/goodbye“, 100%Gumdrop‘s got you covered.  Love.

just cool letter head. This line of personalized note cards, stationery and business cards is made for “gentleman and the not so gentle” by the family owned and operated company Terrapin / Stationers Engraving & Printing Co. right here in New York City.  They started back in 1913 and continue to use the same high quality materials, craftsmanship and standards to this day. A fine line of paper goods that’s got a men’s touch. I mean, the F bomb’s even thrown in there. Like I said, this one’s for the guys.

Guest Hunter, Joyce Hwang

Met..

Guest Hunter, Joyce Hwang

Guest Hunter, Joyce Hwang

our Guest Hunter, Joyce Hwang when we worked together a while back. She’s one of those people who’s super easy-going, always smiling and has fun with her style. Joyce was born and raised in Hong Kong, moved to the States to attend Northwestern University and then headed to New York to start her career in the fashion industry. Currently she’s living in Hong Kong where she’s Product Merchandiser for The Outnet (China) and in a few months will be moving to Shanghai to continue to work for the Net-a-Porter subsidiary.

For Joyce and fashion, no two days are the same.  It’s a great way to “transform and innovate” she says.  “One day I feel like being a hippie, the next day a business woman, the next a rocker.” She describes her style as “eccentric – easy looks with unexpected mixes while still feeling like myself and wearing clothes that make me happy”. She’s an individual and onto trends way before most, so KEEP READING to get schooled from this star.

why am I just learning about this now? From the brilliant minds that brought us the always busy, super delicious momofuku noodle bar comes momofuku milk bar.  Maybe I’m stating the obvious, but they have four spots around the city that specialize in tasty treats that sure to kill any craving known to man.  Cake Truffles (the b’day cake truffles would be my pick), Compost Cookies (which are made from pretzels, potato chips, coffee, oats, butterscotch, and chocolate chips) and Crack Pie (toasted oat crust with a gooey butter filling) are just a few of their heavenly creations.  Need a fix and not in the city? They’ll ship.

Guest Hunters, Kait Vasquez & Chelsea Carson

Our first..

Kait Vasquez & Chelsea Carson
Kait Vasquez & Chelsea Carson

Guest Hunter post of 2012. To start things off right, we’re introducing two beauties, Kait Vasquez and Chelsea Carson. This sassy duo founded the lingerie line RELIQUE which they started last year by making hand dyed pieces. The emphasis of the line is to make lingerie part of an outfit, rather than being hidden underneath. But what began as a small etsy shop, is quickly transitioning into something greater. RELIQUE,is currently an international collaboration as Chelsea is living in Milan, Italy studying pattern making, and Kait is now calling Brooklyn home, while working her way up the corporate ranks in NYC.

Chelsea brings us a smart assortment that she has come across in her travels, and Kait’s down-to-earth vibe surely comes through in her picks. We’re liking what they’ve got to share, so KEEP READING for more from this pair.
