by the name of Kellie Kalvig is this week’s Guest Hunter. Kellie grew up in the Pacific Northwest and is currently happily living in Brooklyn. She works as a Freelance Art Director so she’s had the luxury of living in some amazing places like San Francisco and Sydney. She’s a self proclaimed “foodie, water lover and deal finder”. Not to mention, Kellie’s one of those people who is hard to keep track of because she’s always jetting off somewhere. Day trips, road trips, big trips, you name it, she’s down.
Kellie’s picks were inspired by her love of travel and some of the amazing places she’s been fortunate enough to visit. With her awesome eye, amazing sense of creativity and fun personality, it’s no surprise, her choices are pretty darn badass. So keep reading to check out what this worldly lady’s got to say!
I love buying screen prints from places I’ve lived or love. They also make great gifts. Some of my favorites:
This scratch off map is a fun way to keep track of your travels. Flight 001 sells a mini version.
Artist Dolan Geiman’s Contemporary Art with a Southern Accent always catches my eye. I first saw his work at an art show while visiting Chicago. Americana mixed-media!
This topographic sink is just plain cool. It’s the Erosion Sink by Gore Design.
There are a few things that I don’t travel without(and basically have with me any time I leave the house).
Bright lipstick—the brighter the better. My current obsessions are MAC Lady Danger + Girl About Town.
Dr. Pepper Lip Smacker—preferably the giant tube—which I have been using since I was a kid.
An essence oil of some kind, because you never know when you need to freshen up. And its always nice when someone tells you you smell good. My Staples are:
I am always entertained by the UrbanDaddy.com travel section. It’s focused on totally dude-y adventures that either seem awesome like any cool lady would want go too(rafting, gambling and choppers out west), or seem super funny and douchey (jet pack flight school).
I think it’s always good to inspire kids to have adventures – from building forts to making up stories to actually going places. Donna Wilson is a London-based designer making all sorts of cool stuff for the home, including this Boat Mini Blanket that seems like the perfect start to an afternoon sea voyage.
Any time I travel I love to bring home local hot sauces. Check out this collection from a recent trip to New Orleans. Some other favs are Salsa Lizano from Costa Rica and Melinda’s Hot Sauce from Belize. You can usually find them at home if you keep your eyes peeled.
And here are some memorable foodie shots from my travels:
Bacon Caesar from Garibaldi Lift Company in Whistler
Latte from Bourke Street Bakery in Syndey.
Pizza from Motorino in Manhattan
Blue Point Oysters at the French market in New Orleans
A great foodie vacation read is Blood, Bones & Butter by Gabrielle Hamilton, owner of Prune restaurant in the East Village.
And anywhere I go, it’s always awesome finding local farmers markets for fresh and delicious fruits and veg.
If I am talking about travel.I can’t leave off amazing things to do:
Swim with whale sharks near Ningaloo Reef off the west coast of Australia.
Roam with buffalo in Yellowstone National Park.
Find your inner Magnum PI and take a helicopter ride over the Na Pali Coast in Kauai, HI.
Relax at Eclypse de Mar Eco Resort in Bocas del Toro, Panama.
On my trip list: Seadventures Dive Resort near Sipadan. Located between Borneo, the Philippines and Indonesia, it’s an abandoned oil rig, which has now converted into a dive hotel.
