Guest Hunter, Jen Gilmour

Jen Gilmour, this week’s Guest Hunter, the first year I moved to New York. We were at a mutual friend’s birthday party and I knew immediately that I wanted to be her friend. Ask anyone and I think they’d say the same thing.  She’s just one of those people that others aspire to be – totally confident, friendly and so sincere.  This assistant in the fashion industry turned social worker is just cool. She finds the good in pretty much any situation, practices what she preaches and is such an amazing soul. From the guys who work at the local wine bar to the woman who calls everyone “honey” and asks for a dollar outside the corner deli, everyone knows Jen. She loves music, her cats, living in Brooklyn, and discovering new places – so read on to learn about Jen’s top picks from a true local.

HOME:

Diptyque Feu de Bois Scented Candle, $90

Diptyque Feu de Bois Scented Candle, $90

diptyque candles- feu de bois scent– i’m a little obsessed with candles and this is an amazing clean scent with a slight hint of wood.  the fragrance is just right- it fills the room without being overwhelming.   this scent in particular reminds me of fresh clean laundry smell, but even better.  it’s so clean and refreshing.  a friend bought me a diptyque candle years ago and i’ve been hooked ever since, another favorite diptyque scent is the myrrhe.

HERS:

Biotique Dandelion Face Vitaliser, $34.95

Biotique Dandelion Face Vitaliser, $34.95

biotique dandelion face vitaliser– my best friend went to india for a year to study ayurveda, she returned with biotique products and i’m absolutely hooked.  biotique products smell fantastic and they are more affordable than a lot of products out there.  dandelion lotion  has nutmeg oil and vitamin E to firm your skin while giving it a beautiful glow.  the walnut scrub– it’s the best face scrub i have ever used.  it has a creamy texture, your skin feels incredible after using it and it smells amazing!  it leaves your skin feeling totally fresh and bright.

HIS:

The Rock Co-op

The Rock Co-op

rockaway beach has become a favorite summer spot for me and the rock co-op is a great place to prepare you for the beach.  they have surfboards, surfwear, sunglasses and jewelry.  it’s a great store, but it’s also right next door to rockaway tacos, and rockaway tacos is a reason to head to rockaway beach in itself.

FOOD:

Saraghina

Saraghina

saraghina– this restaurant is a hidden gem right in my neighborhood- bed stuy.  i definitely have an obsession for great pizza and they have delicious pizza along with pastas, salads and wine.  my favorite saraghina pizza is the capocollo that has mozzarella and spicy salami.  i cannot say enough good things about this place because it’s super charming, with great service and a wood-burning stove.   the italian country decor and candlelight make it a perfect place to meet with friends inside or outside in their beautiful garden.  it’s softly lit, cozy, warm and perfectly rustic.  it’s the kind of place that invites you to stay awhile and enjoy your food, wine and friends.

GREAT THINGS:

Jen's Bike

Jen's Bike

my bicycle- i love being able to venture out on my bike during the summer.  i ride it to work, to meet friends, run errands and to discover new places in brooklyn.  that’s how i discovered the bush doctor.  this place is tiny, but so amazing.  it’s a smoothie place, but they also have incredible sandwiches and veggie drinks.  they have over 50 smoothie and veggie drinks.  my favorite order is the walnut salad sandwich and brother man smoothie. they make everything fresh and it can take time so it’s not the place if you’re in a rush.  it’s so worth the wait and Tiecha, the owner, is so sweet.

  2. I’m Jen’s cousin from Michigan – Debbie. I visited Jen in New York this past December. She welcomed us into her home with open arms with snow piled so high everywhere! She is such a wonderful person! She took us to great restaurants including the one she highlights in her top picks! I am very blessed to be Jen’s cousin and call her a friend! She truly is an amazing soul!

    • thanks so much for your note, jen’s the best & i’m jealous you got to check out that restaurant, it’s now on my list!

  3. This was a great article. I was not aware of this site until now, and really enjoyed this particular article, as I am probably somewhat predjudiced to the subject.;-) This was so beautiful Jennifer. You never cease to amaze me. I love you more than I can say. I am so proud of you.
