Say hello to..
Jackie Mittelhammer, this week’s Guest Hunter. A long time friend and savvy entrepreneur, Jackie co-owns Savory Spice Shop Westfield with her sister. After many years at a corporate job, she knew it was time for a change. On a trip to Colorado, Jackie came across a great opportunity to start her own business. With a bit of patience and a lot of hard work, they were able to open Savory in Westfield, NJ.
Savory houses over 400 spices and seasonings, making any foodie’s mouth drool. If you’re in the area, a stop in the shop is a must as you’ll be blown away by the copious amount of spices & blends. And if you need some guidance (I know I sure did) Jackie’s knowledge and comforting nature can point you in the right direction. If you can’t make it to the store, hit up their facebook page for more info on how to get the goods delivered right to your doorstep!
Check out what Jackie is into at the moment..
Being the lucky homeowners of a charming, 1920s “fixer-upper”, we’re always fixing something or looking to refurbish and work with what we’ve got. Young House Love is where I turn for great advice, tips and endless inspiration. John and Sherry Petersik, the ultimate DIY’ers, are just some average folks with no formal interior design or construction experience. They created a blog that details the highs and lows they’ve faced, and continue to face, through the course of their home design and renovation. From simple things like picking out paint color to tackling a complete kitchen renovation, you can find lots of inspiration along with the gory details of their trials and triumphs.
I have somewhat of an obsession with horseshoes. I used to ride horses when I was young, and my love for them has carried over into most aspects of my life. We have our lucky horseshoe hung over our front door, lucky horseshoe earrings (that were one of my fav gifts from my sister Becky), and my lucky horseshoe that I’ve had permanently tattooed on my foot! I recently found this great bangle to add to my collection; from Nicole Richie’s new’ish line, House of Harlow 1960..
With my husband being the “rock star” that he is, whenever I find a cool piece like this that he can incorporate into his jam sessions, i feel pretty lucky. Men are so hard to shop for anyway, aren’t they!? Not only is this pick made from 20 gauge sterling silver (top-notch quality) but you can personalize it with your very own hand-stamped message. How perfect!
Spending so much time in our spice shop, I find that I have a new “favourite” every week. Lately it has been one of our spicy Moroccan blends, Harissa. Traditionally a North African spice blend, Harissa is a fiery hot condiment that is as common there as Louisiana Hot Sauce or Tabasco here in the States. It can be found on almost every North African table, and is used on many foods like kebabs, stews, soups, salads, veggies, couscous, chickpeas and cooked meats like lamb, beef or chicken. Try it as a replacement for condiments like mustard, if you like your sandwiches hot! One of my favorite Savory recipes is for Harissa spiced green beans. This makes for a fantastic summer salad that would pair nicely with any backyard BBQ, and also for a great one for the vegetarians out there.
Another great recipe that I recently tried and LOVED was Gail Simmons’ exciting spin on grilled chicken (now that everyone is firing up their grills again). After a bath in a Harissa marinade, the chicken is grilled on a hot cast-iron grill pan, then sliced and served topped with a cooling cucumber yogurt dressing. Check out more of the recipe.
I just think there should be more initiatives out there like this. Warby Parker was conceived by a group of friends as an alternative to the overpriced and bland eyewear available today. They provide high-quality, better looking prescription eyewear for under $100. The folks at Warby Parker believe that everyone has the right to see, but yet millions of people around the world today don’t have access to proper vision care. To help address this problem, they’ve partnered with renowned non-profits to deliver a pair of glasses to someone in need for every pair they sell. This then shares the gift of vision with someone who can’t see today, giving them the opportunity to live a fuller life. Warby Parker also offers a super-cool home try-on program. It allows you to choose any five pairs of glasses from their site and they’ll ship them to you for free. You then have five days to try out the frames, take them for a “test drive” and then pick your favorite pair. Ship them back (on them) and place your order online!
